I’m going to Tanzania for two weeks as part of a charity thing and she just pretty much exemplified my earlier post about the stigma with mental disorders with her FB post. She has just made me so angry I cannot even put it into words. She doesn’t understand the effects of her opinion but insulting people is not the way to go. People like her are the reason people keep mental disorders to themselves
Two of my best friends also have depression and I was talking to one of them last night. She noticed how skinny I was the first time we met and noticed how much weight I lost, even before she knew for sure I had an eating disorder and she knew something was up. She was shocked that nobody else even realised what was happening and at 5am I explained why and I thought I should share that so here is the message 'there isn't enough awareness - that is why. there's a stigma and people are afraid to attach it to people. people think depression is acting sad when in fact it is acting like you're the happiest person alive when you're with people and wanting to die when you're alone because you feel so empty. people think that people with eating disorders are really really skinny and don't ever eat but you have to eat to live - you just restrict it as much as you can or you binge and purge or even a combination. people think that people with social anxiety just don't leave their room but it's more like u leave and u feel like you have messed up every time you say or do something and that people are judging u and hate you. that is the problem with mental illness and that's why people don't like thinking about it. mental illness is seen as scary, as dangerous to others, as crazy but none of that is true and people are quick to give the label of a mental illness to those who do bad things, rather than talking about the millions of people who suffer from mental illness and don't go around hurting anyone but themselves because people keep it to themselves and that needs to change if any of this is going to change and if people are ever going to be able to recognise the signs before people either die or end up in hospital before they get help.' So for anyone who has a mental illness fight it and then raise awareness. People need to know the truth about them so that we can end the stigma and mental illness can be regarded in the same way a broken bone is - your mind needs fixing and the only way you can do that is if you get help from a doctor. Don’t keep it quiet - shout from the rooftops because beating a mental illness needs to be celebrated with the world.
